Why are there 40,000 job boards
Why are there 40,000 job boards As a job seeker it is so frustrating knowing that you have to check into a bunch of different job boards on a regular basis just to see if there is anything new posted. I thought Id get an account on Monster and be done with it. But alas, I had to get an account on CareerBuilder, and of course Dice (that is the biggest board for techies, which is where I was looking). And then I found that some larger companies had their own boards that I had to check because they didnt post on any of the 3 I already mentioned. Oh yeah, I regularly checked at least one local job board And then I heard there are about 40,000 boards. Blah! How do you manage them, and what should you know about the 40,000? As a job seeker I dont want to miss opportunities. I recommend that you identify the boards that are most applicable to you based on what they have to offer. So, Monster is more of a general, all-purpose one-stop shop for job postings. But I think that employers dont necessarily want to put certain jobs on monster because they dont want everyone and their mother applying or specialized jobs. Knowing what jobs/industries you want and what geography you are interested in should help in selecting the handful of boards that you use. There are many local job boards (see http://www.milwaukeejobs.com/jobnetwork.asp for a map of one network of local boards) that might provide exclusive opportunities. Also, there are various niche boards such as http://www.blueskysearch.com/ (not a very pretty site but this is pretty specialized) and http://www.sws.org/jobs/ (see how pretty that is? I think I see a trend in niche boards ;)) There are also industry specific boards such as http://www.the-dma.org/jobbank/ (marketing) and http://www.artsopportunities.org/ (artists). And if you are an alumnus of a university, check the on-line alumni community as many times other alumni will post jobs on their because they want to hire people that have come from that school and you cant access these jobs unless you login to that on-line community. I cant tell you what what boards you should be on but you should find out if there are any niche boards that you may have overlooked. Here are two things that Ive found that make job boards more valuable to me: 1. Agents many boards (including the smaller ones) have agents where you can save your search preferences (like location of company, favorite companies, job titles, etc.) and then they are e-mailed to you. What a huge timesaver!! Not only does it save you time from going and browsing through the job board, but for me it eliminated the time that I spent just poking around the board out of curiousity I wont deny that Ive spent quite a bit of time just poking around looking at job postings that didnt apply to me, but my curiousity kept me clicking 2. Board aggregators Indeed.com is probably the most popular aggregator right now FlipDog.com was a few years ago (Monster bought FlipDog and it has been offline for quite a while, although Ive read that there have been changes on the landing page and people think that Monster is close to releasing something in its place). Anyway, instead of searching on a bunch of different boards each day or week, you can go to Indeed.com which will query all of the boards and companies at once, which cuts down on your search time quite a bit. Im not convinced that it works perfectly Im not qualified to say but as a desperate job seeker you never want to miss anything! Stop SittingCall a Walking Meeting Instead
Stop Sittingâ¦Call a Walking Meeting Instead Statistically, you sit more than you sleep. As corporate director author Nilofer Merchant explains in her TED Talk Got A Meeting? Take a Walk, we average 9.3 hours of sitting per day, which exceeds the 7.7 hours we sleep. She says its killing us, stating that sitting has become the smoking of this generation. And she proposes a change. But before you watch Merchants inspiring 3-minute video below, consider the following: Researchers at Stanford University found that people were more creative when they were walking, versus sitting. A study at the University of Michigan reports that people who spent time outside were better able to solve creative problems. The journal Environmental Science Technology published research showing that just 5 minutes outdoors can boost your mood Merchant reports that making the switch to walking meetings has changed her life. Take a look and maybe youll hold your next meeting around the block.

9 Surprising Home Remedies That Work Wonders On Pigmentation
9 Surprising Home Remedies That Work Wonders On Pigmentation No matter what the season is, flawless skin is always great to flaunt. Be it a day at work, or just smashing it out of the park with your look at a wedding, or bowling your date over, great skin is an asset to have. So, when I was heading out on a date with my husband after a long time post my delivery, I knew I wanted to get the feels of a first date. So, there I was, ready to slip into the dress Iâd been eying for a while. But when I looked at my face in the mirror, I could see Scooby Doo staring right back at me. Oh, it wasnât Scooby, but the pigmentation on my face kind of made me resemble him. Iâd always known about this issue, but I had never paid too much attention to it. But that day, when I did want to floor my man with my looks, I felt bad. Not because his love for me would fizzle, but because I was seriously concerned about my skin, and I was feeling guilty because I knew I had ignored it for long. I got researching about pigmentation, and to my surprise, there are these sneaky reasons why your skin is discolored in patches. Cooking: Yes, if you dislike cooking but still have to do it, one way of escaping is by using the fact that cooking might cause discoloration of your skin. In fact, anything that causes excessive heat around your skin â" sauna, or even steam â" will be harmful. Perfumes: Fragrances might save you from bad odor, but they are not really great for your skin, especially if itâs sensitive. Stress: If you are worried about something, itâll show on your skin. Studies have proved that stress can lead to pigmentation, so just stop worrying! Illness: One reason you have a lot of pigmentation on your skin could be an illness. Hormonal imbalance, thyroid issues, kidney or liver ailments, and even diabetes could be the reason behind discoloration. Obviously, if you are using bad skin products or not keeping your skin hydrated, it will not be surprising if your skin experiences discoloration. Even coloring your hair could lead to pigmentation, so be careful. Now that we know why our skin sometimes has these different colored patches, itâs also important for us to understand how to fix it. Here are some remedies that can reduce pigmentation. Potatoes Fries arenât the only good thing about potatoes. These veggies can work wonders on your skin, especially pigmentation. The natural enzymes in potatoes, along with the sugars, starches, and vitamin C, help exfoliate your skin. Vitamin B helps renew your skin while potatoâs niacinamide, a niacin derivative of the Vitamin B Complex group, is great for skin lightening. Lemons Vitamin C is one of the best antioxidants that help reduce the production of melanin produced by your skin. This is the reason why lemons, rich in Vitamin C, can help reduce pigmentation. Apart from that, the citric acid present in lemons aids the process because the alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) remove the dead skin cells. Turmeric If you didnât listen to your grandma when she told you that turmeric works wonders for your skin, you were wrong! Apart from having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, the curcumin component helps fix the damage caused by free radicals, helping you fight pigmentation. Avocados Guacamole? Good! Face pack for pigmentation? Better! Thatâs right. Avocados are great for your pigmentation as the fatty acids, vitamin C, and oleic acid they contain fight off hyperpigmentation. Vitamin E is responsible for soothing and moisturizing your skin. Milk If you donât like drinking milk, thatâs alright. There are many other ways you can put it to use without having to consume it. The lactic acid present in milk helps to reduce skin pigmentation and get rid of the signs of aging as well. A bonus! Sandalwood This exotic home remedy will not just help pigmentation but will also make your skin smell amazing. Its essential oils have cicatrizant properties, which means they help heal wounds and get rid of marks. It is also full of sesquiterpenes, chemical components that keep the pineal gland in your brain active, regulating melatonin and releasing it into your blood. This helps pigmentation and also balances your sleep cycle. Strawberries Not just will they make great smoothies, theyâll make your skin smooth as well. Their antioxidant and astringent properties help you take care of pigmentation, while the alpha-hydroxy acid helps in exfoliation. Vitamin C helps collagen production, which lends your skin a younger look, and the omega-3 fatty acids help lighten your skin tone. So much! Papayas Many people donât like the fruit, but what if we said that your skin would love it? Rich in papain, an excellent exfoliating agent, papaya helps exfoliate your skin, encouraging the growth of new skin cells. Its antioxidants and phytonutrients make your skin look younger. Aloe Vera Talking about skin and not mentioning aloe vera? Not happening! The mucilaginous polysaccharides in aloe gel help exfoliate your skin, moisturizing it and cleansing it from inside. This helps fix pigmentation and gives you that much-loved glow. With these ingredients readily available in your kitchen, fighting off pigmentation will become easier for you. So, go ahead, first prevent the pigmentation, else, tackle it with these remedies. Good luck! . Image credits. Main. Eye. Avocado.

Why I Think you Have a Higher Chance of Being Employed than a Donkey
Why I Think you Have a Higher Chance of Being Employed than a Donkey Donkeys have worked for as long as I can remember, reading stories as a kid. The stories go on to say how donkeys dont work smart but they work hard under supervision. In the present conditions you might be dejected you are not getting a job. At times you come up with excuses like Somebody has to give me a job to gain experience how can I have experience without working? According to that argument, a donkey has a higher chance of getting a job than you. Ive also heard graduates say: The job applications take so long, its hard work! Again, a donkey would gladly do hardwork and keep going, as long as it takes. So why do I think that you still have a higher chance of getting employed than a hard working donkey? Ill lay out the reasons point-wise: A donkey can only be that useful in making profit your main leverage are your skills. Employers are looking for people who can be engaged (i.e. work in teams) in the work. You are expected to work smart that is, find better ways to do the job, use your creativity. Innovate. Think. Implement. Make Profit. Be Hired. If you cant do this, then the donkey can take orders, too and do the job. These are also the keywords for a promising performance at an interview! Donkeys dont speak the language employers understand I assume you will only apply to companies that will communicate in a language you know. Use the language skills to communicate. Employers are looking for graduates who can communicate well. Avoid making spelling or grammatical mistakes, run your written answers through MO Word application to check automatically. At interviews / panel discussion / assessment days / group discussions, speak what you think. If you are quiet or cannot communicate properly, then employing a donkey would be cheaper option for the company. Donkeys are loud and embarrassing when they are social if I could post the sound of their laughter and social gathering, I would be prosecuted for disorderly conduct. But this is a key point in todays age of technology. Employers conduct research on interviewees or graduates they are assessing, so if you have anything unsociable written or attributed to on the web, you will either be asked to explain, or rejected altogether. It is a similar fate, if you have embarrassing pictures as your profile picture, or have made albums available to the whole world. Keep your social image clean, do a search on yourself at every stage of employment. These are three of the main points, that I think, make you a more employable character than a donkey. The point is, you might have all the qualities, but if you dont work smart, be communicative, and have a clean social image, then it is very difficult to survive in todays graduate market. Work Smart use the right keywords and explanations on your CV, cover letter and job applications. Dont rush filling them in, read them and re-read them, get them reviewed by your careers service, or at least by friends who can critique it. It is not your experience, or number of part-time jobs that count the employer wants to know that you can work in different environments and be supervised. You can use examples from volunteering, and you should definitely do some volunteering if you dont have work experience on your CV. Communicate if you are quiet or shy, practice speaking. If you have low self confidence read books. Read papers. Knowledge improves confidence that is from personal experience. You can be the best candidate and that is visible from your CV, but if you dont express yourself well and communicate freely with the interviewer, he/she cannot make a sound judgement on the basis of facts that you have NOT provided. Dont be scared of interviews, if you are, you wont get the job. And if you arent getting the job, you might as well enjoy it. Again, confidence in yourself is the key. Background search it used to be a technical term and it still is, but now it also constitutes your facebook/twitter/linked-in/google plus accounts, and basically everything that can be searched freely on the internet. I hope Ive made clear now why I think you have a higher chance of being employed than a donkey. If youve liked this, please facebook like it or tweet it. Its not meant to be offensive, but the reality is, Career Geek Blog is about bringing you honest and tested advice to help you succeed in the graduate market. 14

Bored with Job Boards - How to Find the Best - CareerAlley
Bored with Job Boards - How to Find the Best - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Dream as if youll live forever, live as if youll die today. James Dean So how many job search boards do you think there are? 50? 200? Thousands? This is, of course a rhetorical question because Im not sure that anyone knows the answer (but I am willing to be proved wrong). It is safe to say that there are way too many and that the number is well north of 100 but (hopefully), falls short of 1,000. Like so many things on the Internet, many job search boards are a waste of time. Many of old information or wrong information. But the good news is that there are many really good job search boards. The challenge is to both, access only the best sites and to ensure you balance your time with other job search methods. So what, exactly, qualifies as a Job Search Board? According to Wikipedia, the definition is A job board is a website that facilitates job hunting and range from large scale generalist sites to niche job boards for job categories . . . Users can typically deposit their rsums and submit them to potential employers, while employers can post job ads and search for potential employees. The good news is that you dont need to search through hundreds of job search sites to find the best ones. Many have done that for us already and, it is fairly safe to bet, that those sites that consistently show up on the best lists are probably the best sites to leverage. We all have our personal favorites, and you will need to select those sites that work the best for you. In this case, less is more and you should limit the number of sites you regularly use to no more than 5. This will allow you to balance your time with other job search methods. Make Your Old Job Feel Like a New Job
Make Your Old Job Feel Like a New Job Iâm sharing a guest blog that offers an excellent alternative to those who think that leaving your job is the only option. â" Coach Wolfgang The grass always seems to be greener on the other side. You find a new job posting and immediately imagine all the ways it is better than your current job. You get called in for an interview and you start to do your research. The interview goes well but you are exposed to a number of challenges that youd face in this role. Now you arent sure if changing jobs is worth it. You are comfortable where you are and while you have issues at least you know what they are and how to deal with them. You have a third option You are torn. Its important to start assessing the pros and cons of each job. One option that many people dont think about is this: can I change my current job to have all of the positive things I like about the new job? This third option has the potential to be the best of both worlds some of the exciting parts of the new job and the comfort and familiarity of your current job. So how do you transition your current job to match a new one? There are two parts: 1) figure out what responsibilities you want and 2) incorporate them into your daily routine. The responsibilities you want The first part isnt hard. Identify the responsibilities in the job description for the new job that you want in your current job. Also put down the responsibilities you thought of when you initially saw the job description. Dont alter these responsibilities to fit your current job these should be what you REALLY want to work on. Of course, dont start listing Vice President responsibilities when you are merely trying to become a manager. Start with a job description that is a reasonable target for you. The second part is harder despite how easy it is to say: just start doing it! No formal announcement no big master plan. Just get started by adding one or two items to your day and go from there. At some point, you will stop in your tracks during this exercise and think about one of the following: Ill never be allowed to do these things. I dont have time to do these things. Another team handles those things. There are other thoughts that may stop you in your tracks so here are four tips I suggest for pushing through those barriers and the associated fear. Solve problems Doing your work is important but improving your work or making it more efficient is even better. Use those job responsibilities to identify areas that your team isnt doing or needs to get better at. Chose projects that you will make you look smart, not just hard working. Bosses love initiative Your boss will love to see you take initiative and, even better, have an impact on your bosss team. Regularly communicate your progress on these initiatives and explain why you are doing what you are doing. Plus, document all these initiatives so you can bring them out during your annual review! Dont ask for permission Heres the real key: you dont need to tell your boss you are going to do these great things, just show up with them already under way. Announcing anything too early will just get your boss to put the kabash on your initiative. However, if he or she sees you working and making progress, they are unlikely to get in the way. Put the tasks aside Since your current job isnt changing you are going to have a tough time finding time to take on new items. Heres where you may have to make a pretty big mental shift. You need to put your new responsibilities ahead of those urgent but unsubstantial tasks on your plate. If you put the tasks first then you wont actually get to initiatives that will make your job more enjoyable. So push your email away for a few hours, decline some meetings and dont answer the phone every time it rings. Dont feel bad about it you are doing your company, your boss and you a favor! Dont be deceived here its a lot of work to make changes to your job and your routine. Dont overthink it but, rather, jump in! Finally, know this: when you take on bigger initiatives and responsibilities, you will change many things about your current job and all of them will positively impact your career!
